Crispin Vale, 1894, the Chicago World’s Fair
Crispin worked the fair. He had the warmest smile and always went out of his way to help guests. One night he saw a live wire sparking on the wet pavement where the evening crowd was walking, and he grabbed it bare-handed to move it out of the main pathway.
The current took him — burned through his hands, up his arms, out through his boots. The crowd didn’t scream. They applauded. They thought it was part of the show, the same way they cheered when Topsy the elephant was electrocuted on Coney Island a few years later. A grand statement about the power of the age. Crispin was just a man who died doing the right thing, and nobody even noticed.
But he didnt stay dead. He came back furious with the onlookers — the ones who just stood by and watched. Now he walks the fairgrounds at night with a faint static crackle. He just stands in the dark with that same friendly smile, and every night he picks one of them to experience the terminal sizzle themselves.
